Hiring - Circulation & Program Librarian

Tomahawk Public Library Circulation & Program Position Summary: 

The Tomahawk Public Library is seeking an outgoing, creative, self-motivated, patron-focused librarian to join our programming team. The ideal candidate enjoys working with people of all ages; readily adapts to change; is comfortable both with current technologies and learning new ones; projects a helpful, welcoming personality, and is well organized. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED; an associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred.  At least three or more years of relatable job experience is preferred.  This part-time position reports to the director and works 26+ hours per week with vacation and holiday benefits, one evening a week and one Saturday a month.

This position requires strong customer service and experience with the public. The programming responsibilities include leading/assisting, planning, presenting and/or coordinating youth to adult programming, literacy reading programs and community homebound/outreach with the programming team. The circulation part of the library position will assist patrons at the circulation desk by checking materials out, searching the online catalog, assisting with interlibrary loan, and operating library equipment including computers, fax, and copy machine. Other library responsibilities will be learning the policies and procedures of the library, understanding the library circulation system, checking materials in, finding materials in the library, and shelving materials.

Successful applicants will be comfortable working independently or in groups, embrace responsibility, and have enthusiasm for lifelong learning. We are looking for someone who wants to be part of our library community, who seeks ways to improve his or her value to the library and the library’s value to the Tomahawk area, and who desires to be an active participant in the Tomahawk Public Library.

Circulation and Program Library Position

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Circulation desk and library procedures and policies
  2. Lead, assist, plan, present, and/or coordinate programming
  3. Lead, assist, plan, present, and/or coordinate literacy reading programs
  4. Prepares and coordinates delivery of library materials for homebound patrons and agencies
  5. Lead, assist, plan, present, and/or coordinate promoting programs, creating content for social media and online related to programming and literacy reading programs
  6. Lead, assist, plan, present, and/or coordinate library displays
  7. Assist with check-in, shelving library materials, finishing material processing and other library projects
  8. Perform opening and closing duties
  9. Must be willing to work evenings (usually once a week) and Saturdays (usually once a month)
  10. Performs other duties as required by the library management
  11. Reports to Library Director

Essential knowledge:

  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures and follow policies
  • Ability to communicate effectively and friendly with staff and public (all ages)
  • Ability to operate library technologies properly (including STEAM activities)
  • Computer and keyboard skills

Essential training and experience:

  • High school graduation or GED required
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • At least 3 or more years of relatable job experience preferred
  • Experience in public relations or customer service required
  • Valid Driver’s License and insurance with vehicle

Qualifications and Physical requirements:

  • Must pass a background check for working with children
  • Lifting and carrying 50 pounds or less
  • Pushing and pulling objects weighing 60-90 pounds on wheels
  • Ability to operate library equipment such as fax machine, printers, copiers, and laminator
  • Ability to clean, dust, and vacuum library spaces
  • Ability to salt and shovel 4 inches or less of snow
  • Ability to shelve which requires standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting and reaching
  • Ability to travel to patrons, programs, meetings, and education outside the library, including overnight travel

Desirable characteristics and skills: The employee must be professional, polite, energetic, accurate, and maintain confidentiality and the goals of the library board. Effective communication is essential. Self-motivation, the ability to work independently and on group projects is required.

Compensation: The starting wage is based on the amount of experience. This part-time position is eligible for holiday and vacation benefits. All newly hired employees are subject to a 6-month probationary period.
